Windsor Nursing Home Workers Rock the Bay Area
Last week, more than 700 UHW caregivers rattled the Bay Area at 8 different nursing homes owned by Windsor Healthcare Management. Windsor workers held a two-day unfair labor practice strike on Wednesday September 24 and 25 to fight for the rights and dignity of their residents, their families, and themselves.
“Windsor must prioritize the needs of our residents, who are some of the most vulnerable members of the community,” said Stella Armour, a Registered Nursing Assistant at Windsor Park Care Center in Fremont. “We are eager to return to negotiations, but Windsor is not bargaining in good faith, and refuses to guarantee caregivers an official voice in the delivery of patient care.”
Windsor has been bargaining in bad faith and dragging out contract negotiations with some facilities for over one year. They simply refuse to discuss proposals that would improve patient care, offer caregivers affordable health insurance, provide job security, and pay wages that keep up with the cost of living.
As an example of Windsor’s shameful treatment of its own employees, management locked nearly 600 caregivers out of 6 facilities in retaliation for the nursing home workers successful strike. Community allies, religious leaders, and elected officials joined workers throughout the strike and the lock-out to show Windsor their unwavering support of the caregivers’ campaign for justice and respect.
The power and support of Windsor nursing home workers is growing daily. The successful unfair labor practice strike is just one demonstration of the worker’s dedication and commitment to improving the quality of resident care.
This is another step forward in UHW’s historic 2008 campaign as thousands of healthcare workers across California fight to improve industry standards and the treatment and conditions of patients in need. The power of Our UHW won’t stop!
The two-day strike was organized by nursing home workers at Windsor Manor Rehabilitation Center in Concord, Country Drive Care Center and Windsor Park Care Center in Fremont, Windsor Gardens Care Center in Hayward, Windsor Monterey Care Center in Monterey and Skyline Care Center, The Ridge Care Center and Windsor Gardens Rehabilitation center in Salinas.
