Throughout our nation’s history, American employers have met the need for a growing workforce by relying upon wave after wave of immigrant workers – immigrants whose hopes, dreams, and hard work to improve their lives and support their communities have made America stronger and more prosperous.
Unscrupulous employers, however, have consistently sought to divide working families based on immigration status and to exploit undocumented workers and other immigrants in order to boost profits and drive down pay and benefits for all.
Until recently, most of the labor movement played into the hands of these employers and tried to protect the jobs and standards of U.S. citizens simply by walling up our borders and strengthening enforcement actions against undocumented immigrants.
UHW and SEIU have led the way in recognizing that this failed strategy has only forced more workers and more work underground and made it easier for employers to divide and weaken us.
The labor movement now stands united in advocating that everyone who works hard in America should have the opportunity for a good job that provides a decent paycheck, affordable health care and a secure retirement, as well as full participation in our communities.
Our union is fighting for a comprehensive immigration reform that would:
- Establish an earned path to citizenship for hardworking, taxpaying immigrants
- Create a smarter border security policy
- Set immigration goals that meet our country’s needs
- Penalize employers who exploit undocumented workers
