Workers at Emmanuel Convalescent Hospital in Millbrae are staging a 24-hour strike, which began at 6 a.m. today (Friday), to protest anti-union tactics by the new owners of the home.
Amparo and Carlos Ragudo bought the home last August. They slashed caregivers’ health benefits, retirement benefits and paid time off. They also fired eight pro-union workers without just cause. UHW has filed federal charges to get the fired workers reinstated.
“Our residents deserve to live in a home where they can get the best level of care, not one owned by people who only care about cutting costs,” said Dorys Ramos, a nursing assistant who has worked at the home for more than 20 years.
